Bleached sea sponges found in New Zealand

Sea sponges off the south coast of New Zealand were first found bleached to white due to extreme ocean temperatures. This species is one of the 800 sponge species found in New Zealand. Sponge gardens play an important role in providing habitat for fish and releasing the carbon that other species feed on.
