Benedict Cumberbatch could have joined the MCU much earlier than he did as Doctor Strange in the 2016 solo movie. He could have played the role of Malekith’s antagonist in Thor: The Dark World, which Christopher Eccleston ended up playing. According to Cumberbatch, he turned down the role, wanting to embody a more significant character on the screen.
