Scholz defends his call to Putin ahead of elections
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his conversation with Vladimir Putin had given no indication of a change on the war in Ukraine, but defended his much-criticised decision to call the Kremlin. Scholz’s hour-long call with Putin comes three months ahead of early elections, in which the chancellor faces a stiff challenge from populists on the left and right who are demanding a resumption of diplomacy.
