A powerful storm hit Washington state, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people, disrupting road transport and causing at least two deaths and two injuries. Winds diminished in the region, but the first ‘atmospheric river’ storm of the season has moved into California and is expected to bring extreme rainfall later in the week.
