Greece brought a forest fire on the island of Crete under control on Saturday that forced dozens of people from their homes, the fire service said, while authorities were put on alert due to strong winds. The fire, which broke out earlier in the day, fuelled by strong winds, spread across the slopes of a mountain forest east of the seaside town of Ierapetra.
