Israeli troops and Hamas militants engaged in a fierce ground battle in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday after the Israelis, fighting their way through the devastated Palestinian enclave, reached the centre of the southern town of Khan Younis. Israeli warplanes also bombed targets in one of the heaviest phases of the war in the two months since the Hamas-Israel war began.
