Madagascar struggles against a long drought

Four years of drought, the worst in decades, along with deforestation caused by burning or cutting down trees to make charcoal or to clear land for agriculture, have turned the area into a dust bowl. With very few trees to break the wind in southern Madagascar, red sand blows everywhere.
