Researchers document huge decline in African elephants
African elephants, the largest land animals on the planet, are in peril. In 50 years, savannah elephant populations declined by 70% and forest elephant populations declined by 90%, with poaching and habitat loss the main drivers. In total, there was a population decline of 77% on average across the various sites studied.
