New law giving Paraguay powers to crack down on NGOs sparks controversy
Opposition parties and human rights organisations in Paraguay have condemned a new law that gives the government powers to shut down NGOs that fail to comply with onerous additional audits and suspend their directors and staff. Amnesty International warned that the law violated freedom of expression and compared it to crackdowns on civil society in Venezuela, Nicaragua, Hungary and Russia.
