The capacity of coal-fired power plants increased in 2021

The global capacity of coal-fired power plants, the fossil fuel that emits the most carbon dioxide when burned, grew by almost 1% last year as the world recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. Scientists and activists have called for the world to switch from coal to cleaner energy sources.
