The Color Purple musical – whose producers include Oprah and Steven Spielberg – opened with $18.1 million in 3,142 U.S. theatres. It is the second-highest gross in history for a film opening on Christmas Day and the best since 2009. The record holder for the highest Christmas opening is 2009’s Sherlock Holmes ($24.6 million).
