The European Union and South American trade bloc Mercosur could resolve environmental concerns that are holding up a free trade deal by the end of the year. EU ambassadors have told Brazil that the agreement with Mercosur will not be ratified unless concrete steps are taken to stop the spiraling destruction of the Amazon rainforest.
