The Republic of Congo has declared a Congo smallpox epidemic after 19 cases were confirmed in five departments. No deaths have yet been reported, said health minister Gilbert Mokoki. The population was appealed to take precautions, including avoiding close contact with suspected cases, avoiding contact with animals and avoiding handling bushmeat with bare hands.
