Forest fires in Amazon jungle choke the city of Manaus
Clouds of thick grey smoke from dozens of forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon are hanging over the region’s capital, Manaus, making the air increasingly unbreathable. Residents complain of itchy noses and throats and the air quality is so bad that even the tropical birds, which usually chirp, are silent, they say.
