Hans-Georg Maassen, who until five years ago was responsible for protecting Germany against violent threats to its democracy, is now under surveillance by the security agency he headed. Maassen was removed as head of the German Office for the Protection of the Constitution in 2018 after downplaying the threat of violence by right-wing extremists.
