Study finds mercury contamination among Yanomami people in Brazil
Indigenous people in nine villages in Brazil’s Yanomami territory are contaminated with mercury, with those living closer to illegal gold mining sites having higher levels of contamination. A study by Brazil’s state-run Fiocruz Institute collected hair samples from some 287 indigenous people in October 2022. All of them tested positive for mercury contamination.
